Banksy opened the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem in 2017, directly beside the separation wall. More than a place to stay, the hotel brought art, tourism and political commentary together in a setting where the wall could not be ignored.

This miniature wall sculpture shows the silhouette of a camel against concrete panels marked with graffiti. The camel evokes the familiar imagery of travel, while the wall places it in a landscape defined by barriers and restricted movement. Their combination gives the image its uneasy humour: a scene that might belong on a postcard is interrupted by a structure with real consequences for the people who live beside it.

The sculpture’s small scale invites viewers to look closely at a wall that, in reality, is designed to dominate its surroundings. In keeping with the spirit of the Walled Off Hotel, it uses an accessible image to open a larger conversation about place, movement and division.
