Napalm
2004

Print on Paper

Napalm, also known as Can´t Beat That Feeling, is a stencil piece based in the infamous photograph of a child screaming after severe burning in the midst of the Vietnam War.

In this graffiti we can see three characters. Mickey Mouse at the left, representing a classic American figure with a smile and his hand wide open. In the middle is little Kim Phuc, the girl from the photograph who was attacked and burned after American troops sprayed her village with napalm. She has become an icon of the Vietnam war. On the right, holding Kim’s hand is Ronald McDonald, one of the biggest icons of American capitalism.

This is a reflective but also a sarcastic piece, a helpless child enclosed by two of the biggest representations of consumerism, economy and American values. This way, Banksy puts the central focus on how American culture treats both American and war victim children.
